Swimming Pool Construction

Five general steps to constructing your swimming pool

 Dig

Plumb

 Steel

Gunite

Plaster

Once construction drawings have been completed and approved by the property owner, the Genesis Pool obtains a permit from the city and/or county. Genesis Pool will be required to submit the plans and structural drawings to the city's engineers for their approval.  There may also be other agencies that need approval, it varies from city to city. With permit in hand, we are ready to go. Six to eight weeks is the standard time from start to finish. Sometimes there can be unforeseen challenges ( i.e.; a gigantic boulder). Common reasons a pool’s completion date may be delayed are the other phases of the project: hardscape (concrete) or softscape (landscaping). The Genesis Pool does everything in it’s control to stay on schedule. We communicate on a regular basis with other general contractors involved with the project to keep them informed so they can coordinated their crews in a timely and efficient manner. Job sites should be well maintained and orderly.

The Dig

Once the exact location and elevation of the pool has been determined and all set back requirements have been met, the work begins. Forms are built in the shape of the pool approximately 13" beyond final waterline.

Drainage should always run away from the pool so it is set several inches above the lowest point of the yard. Dirt fluffs up when it is dug so the average pool can produce some 200 yards (approx. 20 truckloads).

The average pool goes from 3'1/2" to 6' in depth.

The Plumbing

Correct plumbing layout is the key to the long-term health and safety of your pool.

The Genesis Pool does all it’s own plumbing to ensure the level of quality. Incorrect water flow and chemistry can not only be damaging to one’s skin, it can also slowly break down the pool’s interior finish.

We make it our business to ensure your pool has healthy circulation. Our materials are high-grade plastics with great flow rates. These pipes will last a lifetime. Everything is pressure tested and inspected.

Now we are ready for the next phase.

Once the plumbing is completed, the pool is ready for steel. A steel cage is built using 3/8" & 1/2" rear tied together 6" - 12" o/c. The exact specifications can vary from pool to pool depending on design and overall soil conditions. The city or county in which you reside can also determine certain aspects of the steel schedule. For the most part, a standard construction method is used and can be fitted to your individual design without adding cost. Once completed the contractor will call for a pre-gunite inspection.

The Gunite

The gunite is a material much like concrete, however, it has a coarser/sandier texture that allows it to be "worked" and "sculpted." A customer once said it reminded them of building a sandcastle. Don't let this crumbly, sandy stuff fool you, once it dries it is extremely strong. The men that perform this phase are like artist/craftsmen. They literally sculpt the pool into it’s final shape. Every detail from how big to make a step to what makes a good waterfall. It can be fun to watch but very noisy.

After weeks of construction the plastering crew arrives and in a matter of several hours the pool will be completed. A crew of five to eight men applies the plaster coat by hand. Approximately 3/8" in thickness, the plaster seals the structure making it watertight. No detail will be missed--each man is assigned to a specific area in the pool and is responsible for making the surface as smooth and consistent as possible—it is harder then it looks. When the last man works his way up the steps and out of the pool, they immediately begin to fill it. Depending on the pool’s size, it usually takes about 24 hours to fill. Initially, high concentrations of acid are added to cure the plaster, so you will need to wait several days before swimming. The water will be greenish and cloudy at first but that will all clear up once the filtration system has a chance to catch up with the volume of water. Now it is time to jump in!
